Overview
Our commitment to providing clean, safe and reliable energy means making improvements to our system, including electrical equipment updates to make the system more resilient in the communities we serve. The Coronado Island Reliability Project is designed to support forecasted load growth and enhance the reliability of the electric transmission system serving Coronado Island.
These improvements are necessary to ensure the electric transmission system continues to meet current engineering and reliability standards, accommodate future energy demand, and enhance the overall safety, resiliency and operational efficiency of SDG&E's electric infrastructure. The project will help strengthen service reliability for customers on Coronado Island while supporting the region's energy needs.

About the Project
The Coronado Island Reliability Project is a California Independent System Operator (CAISO) approved project that will support forecasted load growth on Coronado Island. The project includes upgrades to the two (2) existing transmission sources that currently serve Coronado, as well as the construction of a new third transmission source extending from downtown San Diego to Coronado. The project will achieve the objectives of providing additional capacity to serve existing area load with future customer-driven electrical growth and enhance the transmission and power network to minimize the potential for long-term unplanned outages or service disruptions to area residents and businesses.
During the first phase of the project, crews will perform underground construction work including trenching and conduit installation in public streets in the City of Coronado. This work is anticipated to begin in late September 2026. The impacted streets for this phase of work will be on 1st Street from approximately B Avenue to E Avenue. Work will continue south on E Avenue to 2nd Street, west to Alameda Boulevard, turning north ending near an existing substation near Alameda Boulevard and 1st Street.
Future work on Coronado Island will be to install the new electrical cable in the newly installed conduit, remove and reconductor the cable for the two (2) existing below grade power lines and upgrade the associated electric substations accordingly.
Some public parking and sidewalk access may be unavailable during this phase of the project, as permitted by the City of Coronado, to allow for safe construction access while reducing traffic congestion. At the conclusion of this construction, the work area shall be left in a clean and safe state with no remaining exposure risks. Some construction noise is expected. Trenching equipment, saw cutting and jack hammers, light machinery and power tools will primarily be used for this portion of the project.
What to Expect
Throughout the project, we’ll work as safely and quickly as possible and make every effort to minimize disruptions such as construction traffic, lane/road closures, dust and noise along the impacted streets. Although not anticipated, our work may require us to shut off the power for safety purposes. If so, we will contact you in advance to help make sure you are prepared for a planned outage.
Multiple construction activities may take place simultaneously, which could impact traffic and noise levels. We’ll follow the work hours, traffic control measures and noise restrictions established by local authorities.
